The subject of the present drawing is a variation of the central section of "The Triumph of Venus," an etching by Lorenzo Tiepolo, executed circa 1761 after his father Giambattista Tiepolo's composition. Now exhibited at the Museo del Prado in Madrid, it was one of three ceiling decorations designed by Tiepolo for Empress Elizabeth of Petrovna's Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg.
